SYNOPSIS

THE AUDIENCE IS THE JURY. THE TRUTH IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER.

At the center of Ayn Rand’s Night of January 16th is Karen Andre, a woman accused of murdering Bjorn Faulkner, her former lover and a powerful businessman found dead after a mysterious fall from a high-rise building in New York City. As witnesses take the stand, conflicting accounts, hidden motives and startling revelations complicate the case. With truth and perception constantly at odds, one question looms over the trial: DID SHE KILL HIM?

Fresh off its Asbury Park engagement earlier in 2026, Ruth Stage brought its bold, boundary-pushing production to New York City for a twelve-performance Off-Broadway run at Theatre Row, transforming Rand’s nearly century-old courtroom classic into a fever dream of guilt, power and moral uncertainty. Set in a nightmarish purgatory where souls stand trial and the line between truth and deception dissolves, this radical reimagining plunged audiences into a world where justice is uncertain and the final verdict belongs to them.

Directed by Theo Devaney, the production fused courtroom suspense with surreal, camp-inflected theatricality. 13 Going on 30 and Revenge star Christa B. Allen commanded the hot seat as the enigmatic Karen Andre, while Maryam Basir brought a distinctive, dominatrix-like presence to District Attorney Flint, a role traditionally played by a man. Gary Martins as Defense Attorney Stevens and Matt de Rogatis as Bjorn Faulkner and “Guts” Regan anchored a cast navigating a world of suspicion, manipulation and shifting realities.

At the heart of the experience was Rand’s signature audience-participation concept: the front row became the jury, responsible for deciding Karen’s fate. With two distinct endings determined by the verdict, no two performances were quite the same. Across the twelve-show run, Karen was found guilty only twice, as audiences debated the evidence, challenged the testimony and reconsidered their own judgments. The arguments continued in the lobby and long after the curtain fell. Theatergoers weren't simply watching the trial unfold, they were responsible for its outcome.

The result was a production that cultivated an enthusiastic following during its brief New York engagement. Allen delivered a stoic and icy performance, standing ovations became a recurring feature as audience members declared, “This belongs on Broadway!" With Times Square billboards, broadcast exposure on CBS News New York and PIX11 and coverage from theater critics and prominent industry outlets, Night of January 16th generated attention and conversation well beyond the courtroom.

Though the Off-Broadway engagement has concluded, the trial is far from over. Ruth Stage continues to explore opportunities to bring the production to new cities and audiences. By transforming a play written nearly a century ago into an immersive, psychologically charged experience for contemporary theatergoers, Ruth Stage reaffirmed its commitment to reexamining the American canon through uncompromising intensity and audacious theatrical vision.
